Shipping charges

Add your shipping rates to the checkout total for physical products, and see what changes for your customers when you do.

Shipping charges add the cost of delivery to the checkout total for orders that contain a physical product. You set up shipping zones and rates in Settings → Shipping, then turn on Charge shipping at checkout.

Shipping charges are off by default. While they are off, checkout totals do not include shipping.

Before you turn it on

You need at least one shipping zone with an active delivery rate. Local pickup does not count as a delivery rate.

  • Zones group the countries you ship to. A zone marked Rest of the world covers every country that is not in another zone.
  • Rates belong to a zone. Each rate has one currency, and is one of:
    • Flat rate: a fixed price.
    • Free over an amount: free once the order reaches the amount you set.
    • Local pickup: collection from an address you enter. Checkout never charges a pickup rate as the shipping cost.
  • Turn on Offer this rate at checkout for each rate you want checkout to use.

Live carrier rates and shipping labels are not supported.

Who can turn it on or off

Only an account owner can change Charge shipping at checkout, and only in the Dashboard. Other team roles, API keys and agents can't change it.

  • You must have confirmed it's you with a second factor (a passkey or an authenticator app) in the last 15 minutes. If you haven't, the change is refused and the page shows a Confirm it's you link. Confirm, then try again. If you have not set up a second factor yet, add one in Settings → Security first.
  • Every owner on the account is emailed when shipping charges are turned on and when they are turned off.
  • You can't turn shipping charges on until at least one zone has an active delivery rate.

While shipping charges are on, every owner is also emailed when a shipping zone or its rates are created, edited or deleted, because the change affects what the next checkout charges.

Countries your zones don't cover

Settings → Shipping warns you when your zones don't cover a country you sell to. "Countries you sell to" means your business's home country plus the delivery countries of your orders from the last 90 days. A zone only covers a country if it has at least one active delivery rate.

While shipping charges are on, checkout refuses orders to an uncovered country. The warning appears whether the switch is on or off, so you can fix your zones before you turn it on.

What your customers see at checkout

Shipping applies to a checkout that contains a physical product. RevKeen works out the shipping cost from the customer's delivery country, so turn on Require delivery address on checkout links that sell physical products.

  • Before a delivery country is entered, the order summary shows Shipping: Calculated from your delivery address.
  • Once a country is entered, the total includes shipping. The order summary shows the subtotal and a shipping row with the rate's name and price, or Free for a free rate.
  • When the customer changes the delivery country, checkout recalculates the total. The customer can't pay until the new total is shown.
  • If no rate covers the delivery country, checkout refuses the order with "We can't ship these items to that address." It never charges the order without shipping.

Tax on shipping is calculated the same way as tax on your products, and is included in the total.

Which rate is used

Customers don't choose a rate. Checkout uses the cheapest delivery rate that applies to the order:

  1. The zone that lists the delivery country is used. If no zone lists it, your Rest of the world zone is used, if you have one.
  2. In that zone, a rate applies when it is offered at checkout, is in the checkout's currency, and, for Free over an amount, the order has reached the amount. The order amount is the goods after any discount, before shipping and tax.
  3. Of those, the cheapest is charged. Local pickup is never chosen. If two rates cost the same, the one listed first in the zone is used.

Payment methods

When shipping is charged on a checkout that requires a delivery address, the customer pays by card only. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Direct Debit are not offered on that checkout.

A checkout link that offers only Direct Debit can't be used while shipping charges are on: customers who open it see "This checkout can't take a shipping charge on the payment methods it offers." Change the link to include card payment, or turn off Require delivery address if the link does not sell anything that ships.

See Payment method eligibility for how checkout chooses payment methods in general.
